Do it Yourself Fencing

Should you Attempt a Do it Yourself Fence?

Are you thinking of installing your own fence? If so, there are some considerations that you'll want to take into account before diving into the project. In the guide below, we cover some of the things you'll want to consider before beginning a fence installation in Columbus, Ohio.

Is it cheaper to build your own wood fence?

Often times it can be cheaper to build your own fence than to hire a professional fence company. However, cost shouldn't be the only thing you consider. Installing a fence can be challenging work and can be hard to get right. Especially if the terrain you're working on is uneven or not level, it can add further complication and may not appear straight once fully constructed.

In order to adequately install a DIY fence, you will also need to have the proper tools. Some of the required equipment for a DIY fence project includes Protective safety glasses, a mason's line, hand saw, tape measure, claw hammer, level, and post hole digger. Fortunately, these tools can all be purchased or rented from a local hardware store.

Do I need a permit to install a fence in Columbus Ohio?

In Columbus, Ohio, installing a fence that is less than 6 feet tall is not considered a regulated structure and can be constructed in your backyard without a permit. If the fence you are looking to install is over 6 feet in height, there are additional requirements that you must follow, and a building permit is necessary.

When it comes to residential fences, you should also be aware of some additional considerations when installing a fence in a side or front yard. If you have any questions or concerns about what is or is not allowed, we recommend reaching out to a professional fencing company. They will do the necessary research and pull all required permits to avoid any costly changes or fines down the road.

Other Considerations

If you decide to install your own fence, one of the most important things you need to do is call before you dig.  Ohio811 is a free service that coordinates with local utility companies to come out and mark your lawn to indicate where any buried cables or lines may be on your property. As of the time of writing this guide, they offered both a call-in option and an option to submit a request online.
